Description

These delicious chili dogs are a classic comfort food favorite, featuring a homemade chili sauce packed with flavor, topped on grilled sausages in soft buns, and finished with melted cheese. Perfect for a casual family dinner or game day gathering!

  • 1 1/2 tsp oregano
  • 1/2 tsp mustard powder

Chili Sauce:

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 garlic cloves, finely minced
  • 1/2 onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 red capsicum/bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 500g/1 lb ground beef/beef mince
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 400g/14 oz canned crushed tomato
  • 2 beef cubes
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 3/4 tsp cooking/kosher salt, plus more to taste

Chili Dogs:

  • 6 good smoked sausages or hot dogs
  • 6 hot dog buns
  • 1/2 white onion, finely chopped
  • Yellow mustard
  • 2 cups Colby or Monterey Jack cheese, shredded
  • Plain crinkle-cut potato chips (optional)

Instructions

  1. Chili Sauce: Heat oil in a pot, sauté onion, garlic, and capsicum. Add beef, cook until browned. Stir in tomato paste, spices, crushed tomato, water, beef cubes, and salt. Simmer for 3 hours.
  2. Chili Dogs: Preheat oven. Brown sausages, assemble in buns with mustard, onion, chili sauce, and cheese. Bake until cheese melts. Serve hot with chips.
