Description

Enjoy a delicious homemade version of General Tso’s Chicken made in the Instant Pot. Tender chicken pieces coated in a flavorful sauce, this dish is perfect over a bed of steamed rice.


Ingredients

Chicken:

  • 2 pounds chicken breast, skinless and boneless, cut into bite-size pieces

Sauce:

  • 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dark soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 3 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon water

Optional Garnish:

  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  • 2 green onions, chopped

Instructions

  1. Saute Chicken: Turn the Instant Pot to the saute setting. Add chicken pieces and all sauce ingredients, except cornstarch and water. Stir well.
  2. Pressure Cook: Close the lid, set to Poultry setting, and cook for 5 minutes. Allow natural release.
  3. Thicken Sauce: Open lid, switch to saute setting. Remove chicken, mix cornstarch and water, add to sauce, and cook until thickened.
  4. Garnish and Serve: Garnish with sesame seeds and green onions. Serve over rice.

Notes

  • I strongly recommend reading the manufacturer’s guide for instructions on how to use your Instant Pot before attempting this recipe.
  • Substitute boneless skinless chicken thighs, cider vinegar for rice vinegar, and cayenne pepper for red pepper flakes if needed.
  • For less sweetness, adjust honey or brown sugar to taste.
